Most manufacturers offer a full one-year
parts and labour warranty and a limited five-year warranty
on the cabinet liner and refrigerating system.
This is a personal decision. Size and available
space should be taken into consideration. Upright freezers
provide convenient front-door loading and have shelves for
easy access to foods. Upright freezers are available in both
manual and frost-free versions and they take up less space
than chest freezers. Chest freezers are great for large oversized
items.
Many odours will be eliminated through
regular, thorough cleaning of your refrigerator. Frequently
check for and discard spoiled foods. If the odour persists,
place activated charcoal (available at most hardware stores),
a box of baking soda or ground coffee on a refrigerator shelf
to absorb odours. Replace once a month.
They may be absorbing odours from improperly
packaged foods, or spilled foods. Wipe down the freezer compartment
and discard any items that are not well wrapped. Also a change
in the chlorine level or poor quality of water may be the
problem. Check with city water control. It's a good habit
to clean the ice bin and discard any ice that is more than
a week old.
At least once a week, wash down the refrigerator
section. Empty all contents, discard past dated items. Take
out removable parts (shelves) and wash, rinse and dry. Wash
the walls of the unit rinse and dry. Wash gasket and door
liner. The condenser coils should be vacuumed two to six times
a year. You might want to wax painted metal exterior surfaces
of your appliance to protect against rust in humid climates.
Wipe jars and containers of food before replacing on the shelves.
At least once a month, defrost your freezer.
If your appliance is self-defrosting, it is still necessary
to maintain the interior of the freezer at least once a month.
Check the packaging on the frozen items; discard anything
with freezer burn (improperly packaged). Leave the door of
the freezer open for a few minutes so that your wet cloth
will not stick to the cold surfaces. Wipe down the shelves
and walls with a warm cloth; dry.
For safety's sake make sure that
the unit is plugged into a grounded outlet on a separate circuit
(do not use extension cords). Before cleaning or servicing,
turn controls to off and unplug. Use care when cleaning the
defrost pan (system tubes near the pan may be hot). NEVER
use a refrigerator outdoors. Before discarding an old unit,
always remove the doors. Instruct children to never play
inside abandoned appliances. It is very dangerous.
