How do I avoid problems like dye transfer, wrinkling, lint and fabric damage?

Sort clothes by color, fabric type, soil level and linting characteristics before loading for best washing results. Always wash whites separately from dark colored clothing. Wash non-colorfast items separately in cold water and be sure to keep non-colorfast clothes separate from permanent press and synthetic items as they pick up color easily.
Other separating suggestions: Separate lightly soiled items from heavily soiled, as heavily soiled items can transfer dirt to other clothing. Don't overload the washer or dryer. Clothes need to be able to move freely for best cleaning and drying.

Should I use fabric softeners or bleach?

Using fabric softener and/or bleach is a personal decision. However, if you choose to use a liquid fabric softener, be sure it is diluted properly and added at the proper cycle during the wash. Always measure chlorine bleach, using no more than one cup, before adding to the washing machine. Do not let undiluted bleach come in direct contact with clothing; spotting or fabric break down may occur.

Do I need to use more detergent for dirtier loads?

The amount of detergent used depends on the following: Water hardness - the harder the water, the more soap needed; The amount of dirt - heavily soiled clothes need more soap; Water temperature - the hotter the water, the less soap needed since the detergent is more effective; and The size of the wash load - a larger load needs more detergent.

Do I need to empty the lint screen often?

Yes, clean the dryer lint screen after every load. This enables the dryer to work more effectively by drying clothes faster. Some washing machines also have a lint screen. It's important to keep it free of lint.

What about the dryer vent line - does it need to be cleaned?

The dryer vent line in your home should be cleaned at least once a year. A blocked venting system may cause problem performance of your dryer, and extended drying time.

How do I keep my washer/dryer in top working order?

After each use, wipe down the insides of the machines; and dry the tops and areas around the lids and controls. Never use abrasive cleaners that could scratch the surface finish.

For safety's sake never wash or dry items containing gasoline, cleaning solvents etc. Keep laundry products out of the reach of children. Do not allow children to play around the laundry machines. Discard the plastic bags and cartons the appliances came in to avoid injury to children. Never reach into the washer or dryer while they are working. Position your machines so that there is plenty of air space around them. Keep vents free of obstructions. Keep the area around the dryer exhaust opening free of clutter.
